Village Courts Project trains religious leaders

Activating Village Court Project in Bangladesh organized a training event for religious leaders at its Research and Process Development (R&PD) area in Bhandaria Upazila under Pirojpur District from January 20 till 22, 2014. 76 religious leaders from various religions took part in three different batches.

In the R&PD implementation approach, the local administration is more engaged in implementing the project activities with increased ownership. The concerned Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Deputy Director Local Government are directly managing the project activities together with managing financial resources and administering Union and Upazila level project staff. The trainings were held to inform and educate the religious leaders on the village courts’ jurisdiction, its process and functions.

Mr. Kazi Mahbubur Rashid, UNO of Bhandaria, facilitated the training on the role of the religious leader in raising mass awareness on village courts. The training was also jointly facilitated by Akshay Kumar Sarker, Upazila Supervisor, and Aliul Hasnat Khan, Upazila Trainer of the project. After the training, religious leaders from seven UPs are now acquainted with the overall objectives of the AVCB project, nature and types of cases dealt by village courts, spaces for women and vulnerable groups in terms of seeking justice through village courts etc.
