Upazila Level Sensitization Workshop on VC Held

In the continuous endeavor to sensitize and involve key stakeholders for activating village courts, the ‘Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh’ project organized a upazila level sensitization workshop on involvement of relevant stakeholders for activating village courts on July 10, 2015 at the Upazila Parishad Conference Room, Bhandaria, Pirojpur.

In Research & Process Development intervention approach that is implemented at Dakshin Surma and Bhandaria Upazila, where local administrations are engaged more in implementing the project activities. Under this approach Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Deputy Director Local Government are directly managing the project activities with regard to both financial matters and administering Union and Upazila level deployed staffs.The workshop was organized to involve field level and mid-level government officials and other key stakeholders with the process of implementing the project activities through informing and involving them about the potentials of activating village courts.

Honorable Minister of Environment and Forest Mr. Anwar Hossain Monju, MP graced the workshop as the chief guest while Deputy Commissioner of Pirojpur district AKM Shamimul Hoque Siddiqui and Md. Walid Hossain, Superintendent of Police were present as special guest. The workshop was presided by Md. Ruhul Quddus, Bhandaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer. The Honorable Minister, in his speech, appreciated for selecting Bhandaria upazila for this project. However, he sought all the relevant stakeholders’ cooperation in activating the village courts. In this connection, he directed to follow the VC legal framework appropriately in resolving the disputes.

The Deputy Commissioner shared his observation that people have confidence on Union Parisad so they are lodging cases at the village courts. He also mentioned the overall success of the village courts in Bhandaria Upazila which he observed during his field visits. The workshop was also attended by Md. Atikul Islam Uzzal Talukder , Chairman of the Bhandaria Upazila Parisad, Md. Miraz Hossain and Ms. Asma Akter, Vice-Chairman of Bhandaria Upazila Parisad, 7 UP chairman under Bhandaria Upazila as well as government officials, NGOs, lawyers, women representatives, media representatives, youths etc.
