First Government Cost Sharing Agreement Signed

November 13, 2014 is a landmark day for UNDP Bangladesh in resource mobilization! On this day the first ever tripartite agreement among LGD, UNDP and ERD was signed for the extension of Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh (AVCB) project where GoB will fund USD one million. The Project is closing in December this year while the Phase II of the project would commencing in January 2016. Being satisfied with the success and achievements of the Project, LGD, UNDP and EU decided to continue with the momentum of the current project.

In this regard, LGD came forward with USD one million for bridging the gap between current phase and the potential next phase of the project. This GoB contribution is the first ever case of government cost-sharing with UNDP in Bangladesh. All stakeholders (EU, UNDP and GOB) consider AVCB as a flagship project and would like to scale up in wider geographic area.

Sicne 2010 uo to September 2014 a total of 62,537 cases are registered in village courts, which 49,071 cases are resolved so far. It has taken only 28 days in average to solve per case at the village courts. Furthermore, 3,878 cases are transferred from District courts to Village Courts which demonstrates VC’s contribution in reducing case backlogs in the district courts. In total, BDT 160.59 million (USD 2.07 million) are recovered as compensation from respondents since 2010 and provided to the petitioners.

Mr. KM Mozammel Hoq, Additional Secretary of LGD and National Project Director of AVCB Project, Mr. Ashadul Islam, Additional Secretary, ERD and Mr. Nick Beresford, Deputy Country, UNDP signed the agreement on their respective behalf. Mr. Monirul Islam, Joint Secretary, ERD, Mr. Rustam Pulatov, Assistant Country Director a.i, Mr. Salahuddin Khan, Programme Analyst and Mr. Sarder M. Asaduzzaman, Project Coordinator AVCB Project, UNDP were present among others.
