OFPRA Delegation lauds Village Courts Project

A delegation of the Office Francais De Protection Des Refugies Et Apatrides (OFPRA), France highly appreciated the on-going activities of the Village Courts in bringing justice to the doorsteps of the rural people while visiting Tetli Union Parishad of Dokshin Surma Upazila in Sylhet District on April 11, 2015.

The Delegation consisted of Irene Ketoff, Researcher, Paul Leplomb, Legal Consultant, Estelle Toureau and Elissa Dupart, Protection Officer of Office Francais De Protection Des Refugies Et Apatrides (OFPRA) and Mr. Joel De Zorzi, Judge Assessor (Former Ambassador), Court National du Droit d’Asile, France. Visiting envoys expressed such feelings while discussing with UP representatives, village courts service recipients and observing an ongoing trial session of a Village Court.

The French Delegation had a fruitful and depth discussion on legal framework, procedures of village courts justice delivery where Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Dokshin Surma Upazila, Mr. Shakhawat Hossain attended together with UP representatives, community peoples, project staff etc. Mr. Shakhawat Hossain, Attache de Presse et Communication, Embassy of France in Bangladesh and Mr. Anamul Haque Khasru, Training Officer, AVCB, UNDP were attended.

Mr. Osman Ali, Chairman, Tetli Union Parishad briefed about the on-going activities, results and practical experience on Village Court as well as Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh Project underscoring access to justice at a low cost and in a short time and the benefits it brought to rural people at local level with substantial contributions toward reducing the backlog of cases in the higher courts. Service recipients also expressed their satisfaction about services they received from village courts due to its affordable nature, fair functions without any hassles. Later on, the delegation observed an ongoing trial session of a village court at Tetli Union Parishad.
