EU representative praises Village Courts

Ms. Lenka Vitkova, Head of Operations-1, Delegations of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh, and Mr. Luc Patzelt, Programme Manager from the Delegations together with Mr. Nick Beresford Deputy Country Director, UNDP Bangladesh visited Parul union of Pirgachha upazila in Rangpur district on May 28, 2014.

The visiting envoy highly appreciated the on-going activities of the Village Courts Project in bringing justice to the doorsteps of the rural peoples. They had the opportunity to observe an on-going trial session of a Village Court.

The Deputy Country Director of UNDP Bangladesh and EU envoy also met local administration at various levels and had fruitful meeting with local authorities led by Mr. Farid Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Rangpur. The DC stressed upon the importance of continuity of Village Courts service and informed EU representatives how people are enjoying access to justice at a low cost within a short time through current interventions. Discussions with local government representatives including Union Parishads Chair and other government officials revealed benefits of Village Courts services in reducing case backlog in the higher Courts.

Mr. Ershadul Huq, DDLG Rangpur (Deputy Secretary); Ms. Alia Ferdous Jahan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Pirgacha upazila; Mr. Mohammad Salahuddin Khan, Programme Analyst, Democratic Governance Cluster and Mr. Sarder M Asaduzzaman, Project Manager, AVCB project, UNDP accompanied Deputy Country Director, UNDP and EU envoy during the visit.
