VCP organizes Sharing Meeting with Chittagong Police

Police plays a crucial procedural responsibility while receiving complaint and enquiring into it. It is evident that in many cases police receive cases which could be tried under village court but they send them to court and then the court refer them back to Village Courts. This to and fro process causes suffering and financial loses for disputing parties while losing valuable work-time at the same time. Moreove, this also hampers the legal and moral standing of establishing a strong village court system. Hence Police officers have a very important role to play to end this vicious cycle by being engaged in activating village courts.

As a part of its continuous endeavor, to sensitize and engage key stakeholders in activating village courts, the Village Courts Project organized a Sharing Meeting with Police Officers in Chittagong on 26 August, 2014 at the conference room of the Superintendent of Police (SP). Mr. A K M Hafiz Akter, SP, Chittagong graced the meeting as the Chief Guest while Mr. Nazmul Hassan, Additional Superintendent of Police, Chittagong chaired it.

The SP, Chittagong remarked that local police stations are overburdened with cases and Village Courts can ease this burden by providing justice to the people. He said this sharing meeting will bring immense benefits to all police officers from different police stations of Chittagong. The SP also asked all Officers in Charge (OCs) to refer all VC-trailable cases to respective unions according to the amended Village Courts Act 2006. He promised to extend necessary cooperation from police administration in functioning Village Courts in Chittagong District.

The meeting was attended by a total of 45 participants including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Officer-in-Charge (OCs) and Inspectors from different police stations of the district. Besides, Md. Mansur Ahmed, District Facilitator of AVCB Project for Chittagong and Ms. Fahmida Sultana, Monitoring and Documentation Coordinator, AVCB Project, BLAST attended and facilitated the sessions as well as gave an overview of project.
