Village Courts Project Phase-2 Formulation Mission landed

UNDP and EU jointly commissioned a Formulation Mission for designing the Phase 2 of Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh (AVCB) Project. The Mission was launched at meeting with pertinent stakeholders at Officer’s Club, Dhaka on 23rd February 2015. In the meeting, the Mission shared their objectives, collected insights from different participants on the current phase as well as expectations to be reflected in the next phase. This month-long Mission will work closely with AVCB Project Team, implementing ministry, different tiers of the government functionaries, local government institutions, judiciary, police, other UNDP projects etc.

Mr. K M Mozammel Hoq, National Project Director, AVCB Project & Additional Secretary, LGD, MoLGRD&C inaugurated the meeting while Ms. Anna Lixi, Section Head, Human Rights and Governance, EU Delegations in Bangladesh hlighted EU’s expectations and priorities related to AVCB Project as well as procedures to be followed in connection to obtaining the final approval of this project.

Mr. Salahuddin Khan, Programme Analyst, UNDP shared the significance of AVCB Project in overall access to justice framework in Bangladesh and UNDP’s priorities in this connection. The Additional Secretary opined that the AVCB Project has already been emerged as a flagship intervention to EU and UNDP and they have deployed Formulation Mission to design the second Phase of AVCB Project aiming to scale it up across the country. He also added that the formulation mission would work together to develop project document through consultations with different stakeholders at both national and local level where the inputs of participants are very important.

One presentation on reflection of progress, challenges and lessons learnt of on-going project was presented by Sarder M Asaduzzaman, Project Manager, AVCB Project. At the end of the session, participants thanked both UNDP and EU for their continuous cooperation, exchanged their views about the project and recommended to replicate the project covering at least half of the country.

A total of 24 participants including representatives from EU, UNDP, ERD, Planning Commission, LGD, MIE Wing, AVCB Project and members of formulation mission attended the inception meeting.
