UP representatives trained on Village Courts (amendment) Act, 2013

Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh Project started conducting a series of capacity building trainings for UP representatives on Village Courts (amendment) Act, 2013. Two different training events, three-day long each, are organized in research and process development (R&PD) areas in Bhandaria and Dakshin Surma Upazila respectively under Pirojpur and Sylhet District. In total 48 UP representatives and Secretaries took part, 27 in Bhandaria and 21 in Dakshin Surma, respectively on 5-7 and 8-10 February, 2014. Among the participants 10 were women, 2 secretaries and 7 UP Chairmen.


Following the recent amendment of the Village Courts Act in 2013, these trainings aim to orient UP Chairmen and members and acquaint them on amendments and its salient features e.g. increase pecuniary jurisdiction from BDT. 25,000 to 75,000, option for mandatory women representation in the decision making panel, penalty for filing false cases, increased penalty for contempt of court or non-compliance, etc. Participants of these training courses are expected to offer justice service effectively and efficiently in R&PD areas according to the amended VC Act 2013.


In the R&PD interventions, local administrations are more engaged in implementing the project activities. Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Deputy Director Local Government are directly managing the project activities with regard to both financial matters and administering Union and Upazila level deployed staffs. Mr. Kazi Mahbubur Rashid and Mr. Rashedur Rahman respectively UNO Bhandaria and Dakshin Surma has inaugurated and facilitated those training courses. The Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh Project intends to cover all 168 Chairmen, members and secretaries through seven different courses within March 2014.
