EU commends Village Courts

While visiting Parkrisnapur-Madna Union of Damurhuda Upazila in Chuadanga District on June 06, 2014, Mr. Dirk Meganck, Director, DEVCO H, Asia, Central Asia, Middle East/Gulf and Pacific & Mr. Jos Jonckers, Deputy Head of Unit H1, Geographical Coordination Asia and Pacific from European Union (EU) Headquarters in Brussels lauded the on-going activities of the Village Courts Project in bringing justice to the doorsteps of the rural people.

This high level EU team also included Mr. Philippe JACQUES, First Counsellor and Head of Cooperation; Mr. Gonzalo SERRANO, First Secretary and Head of Section and Mr. Luc PATZELT, Attaché and Programme Manager, EU Delegation. Visiting envoys also observed an on-going trial session of a Village Court.

The high level EU team had a fruitful meeting with local administration led by Deputy Commissioner, Chuadanga Mr. Md. Delwar Hossian where Ms. Blerta Cela, Assistant Country Director of UNDP; Mr. Mallick Sayeed Mahbub, Deputy Secretary and Deputy Director Local Government, Chuadanga and Md. Faridur Rahaman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Damurhuda were present.

The Deputy Director Local Government, Chuadanga briefed about the on-going activities and results of the Village Courts Project underscoring access to justice at a low cost and in a short period of time and its benefits brought to the rural poor at local level with substantial contributions toward reducing the backlog of cases in the higher courts.

Beneficiaries expressed their satisfaction about services they received from village courts due to its affordable nature, fair trial without any hassles.
